So, I really want an addon for WoW to track the online status of more people, and have autocompletes for sending mail, and have saved notes regarding each character of the friends list. There doesn't seem to be any addons to do this well. Partly because it turns out it's a non-trivial problem to track the status of more people than WoW allows you to friend (49).

Casey suggested I make it, and I think I'm going to try. I think the idea will be for the addon to store a list of all the people you want to try to track. Then it will look for ways to track them. For example, where the character to be tracked is in the same guild as the character you're currently on with, you can pull status from the guild list, rather than using up one of your valuable 49 space on your friends list. Then all sources of information will be collated into a single display of online statuses.

Additionally, it would store character names you want to autocomplete as mail recipients, but don't care about tracking the online status of, such as your alts, again freeing up valuable spaces in your 49.

I started learning to write the addon. I got through the Ace2 tutorial addon: WelcomeHome (well, I did everything but the localization, which is weird and annoying and not strictly necessary).

I haven't gotten very far in learning to put together anything that I'm not being led through in baby steps yet. But I also need a name for the addon pretty soon. I worry about that for now.
